| By the end of February 2001 we had
accumulated so much poorhouse information for Ohio that it became
necessary to present the material in a different format -- by using
a table (scroll down) of separate pages for each county. We did so
with mixed feelings. (It has been a little like watching a small
hometown grow into a very big city!) Where previously we could see
at a glance what had become known about poorhouses all over the
state ... now it is necessary to enter the specific county pages to
learn what is available. We have retained on this state page several
features which will be of interest to researchers
seeking information from anywhere in the state; but we would
encourage you to occasionally browse the links on the table below ... just to see
what folks in your neighboring counties have discovered. And we
sincerely thank all of you whose suggestions and submissions have
made it possible for our knowledge of poorhouses in Ohio to grow so
comprehensive! But the work is not yet complete. Please know how
welcome your future contributions will be!

| HISTORY: There is an excellent brief survey of the history of poorhouses
in Ohio in the book OHIO GENEALOGICAL GUIDE, by Carol
Willsey Bell. Published by Bell Books, Youngstown, OH, 6th
edition, copyright 1995.

(WPA) INVENTORIES OF THE COUNTY ARCHIVES OF OHIO
--
EXCERPTS RELATED TO POORHOUSE (INFIRMARY) HOLDINGS
During the 1930's and 1940's
the Work Projects Administration (WPA) began the process of inventorying
County Archives of Ohio. Those which inventoried infirmary records
have been transcribed and links are here posted on a table. |
| We have found so many infirmary/poorhouse records for Ohio that
we have created a special page for the references-- which will be found in a table
alphabetized by county. |
