YATES REPORT (Excerpt for RENSSELAER County) |
|
STATE BOARD OF CHARITIES. 1031
The amount paid by the town of Brunswick
was
except $35.85, paid towards the house of industry In Troy.
$42,964. 17
Total,
$44, 973.33 [Note.--It is worthy of remark that three out of the four towns which have come into the poor-house system, have raised no taxes the past year, and the fourth town (Scaghticoke,) raised a small sum only, on account of the debts it owed for costs of appeals, &c.] BERLIN There Is no
poor-house in our town; there is one in the county, but the management
of it I am not acquainted with, as
we have no share in it. The paupers in our town, are commonly kept by
some one, for a given sum, according to their situation, by the year or
otherwise, and as
they
become more troublesome and old, it will cost us more of course. [Letter
from the supervisor of Berlin.] HOSICK. The
overseers of the poor of this town have for several years, hired a man
to support all the poor that shall become a town charge, during the year
for a certain sum. The last year they gave $400. Our town is not
interested In the house of industry established in this county. [Letter
from the supervisor of Hosick.] GRAFTON. There Is no
poor-house in this town, nor have we any connection with any poor-house.
[Letter front the supervisor of Grafton. PETERSBURGH. We hire our poor supported by the
year at a
stipulated
price. The average expense in our town, for six years past for
supporting the poor has been $200. (Letter from the supervisor of Petersburgh.] |
