Here is an excellent report
of the history of the Waukesha County Poor House & Asylum.
Jennifer Fleishmann has submitted the material for this wonderful write-up
about the poorhouse in Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin.

"During the season of 1858, a special committee reported to the board of
supervisors that they elect three persons whose duty it should be to lease the
most suitable plowing land at a suitable distance from town. the said farm-land
to be leased to an overseer, who should keep an accurate account of the number
of persons sent from each town, and that esch [sic] town should pay for the
expenses of its own paupers. It was ordered that the case should be sumitted
[sic] to trial for two years, and Charles Pole, Joseph White, and E. C. Townsend
were appointed Commissioners to lease land for above purpose."
Sorry, when I first copied this out a long time ago, I forgot to note a page
number. But it is a direct quote from the book,
HISTORY OF LA FAYETTE COUNTY, WISCONSIN 1881, published by Western
Historical Society, Chicago, Illinois, 1881
(no author or editor listed).
Hope this is helpful to someone.

NOTES FROM READERS:
"I found a relative on a census in the following
poorhouse: found on the 1920
Wisconsin Census, Waupaca County, Poor Farm
This record was found on microfilm: Vol: 194, Enumeration District:
141, Sheet: 10, Line 72
This record was looked up quite a while ago and the source is
not handy for me to return to at this time. Perhaps this reference can
help someone else find others in this poor house."

This community has done something really admirable by creating beautiful
memorials with the names of those known to be buried there inscribed on the
