"According to an article by Jonathan K.T.
Smith, Madison Co established a poor house in the early 1840s. By 1848
the court magistrates learned that the poor house was very dilapidated and of no
use, so a new committee was formed to find a new site where suitable buildings
could be erected. They did so, and in January 1850 John Irvin was appointed
treasurer of the poor house."
