TENNESSEE POORHOUSE HISTORY by county

LOCAL NOTES:

"According to an article by Jonathan K.T. Smith, Madison Co established a poor house in the early 1840s. By 1848 the court magistrates learned that the poor house was very dilapidated and of no use, so a new committee was formed to find a new site where suitable buildings could be erected. They did so, and in January 1850 John Irvin was appointed treasurer of the poor house."
