****** found at http://www.genealogy.org/~smoore/marion/poorhous.htm These two files are extracted from the Marion County Ohio Poorhouse / Infirmary. They include all admissions from 1856, the opening of the poorhouse, through 1888. The entries include date of event (admission, leaving, death, birth), name, age, township, and comments. Both files contain the same information -- just the order is different. The Poor House records have been microfilmed and are available (on film #1869488) through your local LDS Family History Library. The original record books are in the Ohio Historical Society Library located at 1985 Velma Avenue, Columbus, OH 43211. The files are readable by Adobe Acrobat Reader. Follow this link to Adobe to get your free copy of Acrobat Reader. [Note: These files are totally AWESOME! One problem: On my browser, the download of either of these files took an incredibly LONG time while I was looking at an empty browser screen and only knew from the sounds my computer was making, that anything was going on. But it was absolutely worth the wait! Don't forget -- you need Acrobat Reader and you can zoom in to enlarge the size for easier reading. PHL]

****** [Note: We got a little carried away here! This list has not been limited to only infirmary records. But there are so many different types of records here which could be helpful to genealogists trying to locate documentation about an ancestor who was poor -- that we felt it would be good to show all of these examples. It is important to realize that records such as these were typically created in almost every county. So if they are not microfilmed or on a list of a given county's holdings; they may actually be there -- but in a box which you will have to go and search for yourself! Some of these documents may help gain historical perspective on the circumstances under which poverty occurred and the public sentiments with which it was treated. PHL ] MONTGOMERY
