NEWSLETTER 7/19/2000 (Second issue) Here is your second issue of what has evolved into a
MONTHLY NEWSLETTER for you folks who are interested in the progress of The
POORHOUSE STORY. We decided that
most of us are having trouble controlling the massive amounts of e-mail we
receive … so, unless something earth-shaking happens, you should receive
updates only via this e-mail which will be sent out about the 20th of
each month. (As usual, you can skip all this boring site history stuff and just
scroll down to the dotted line below to cut to the chase!) Well…WOW! The story this month has been one of big
growth. This is not just to blow our own horn about the number of
site visits (“hits”) we are getting
… although it is nice to know that people are interested in what we are
doing <grin> … but to let you know that as more people discover the site
MORE INFO is being sent to us to share with you! As a matter of fact, so much material has been submitted
that I am way behind on getting things posted. (Note: One thing that would help
… if you send something to us
which you find on-line, please send the URL. We are trying to be very
careful to respect copyrights and give people credit for work they have done.)
But … keep those suggestions coming! We would much rather get behind than run
out of material. VISITS TO WEBSITE: We told you that on 6/21 the site had
been visited 1500 times. (That had been over the previous 6 weeks.) On 7/19 …
4 weeks later … visits went over 3700! … an increase of 2200 over 4 weeks!
In addition, the number of subscribers to this newsletter more than
doubled during that time. We also received a wonderful honor by being chosen Site of
the Month for July by the GENEALOGY FORUM (AOLs
network of genealogy sites & services) at http://www.genealogyforum.rootsweb.com/gfaol/bsp.htm
(This surprised us because it was unsolicited and we are not even
currently subscribed to AOL! Thanks to all the AOL genealogy gang!) Here are some of the kind things they had to say about The
POORHOUSE STORY: And ... “The
information and organization of the Poorhouse Story site shows your dedication
and effort in providing easily accessible information to other genealogist. On
behalf of the Genealogy Forum.com, we would like to thank you for your time and
effort in making the Internet a better place to do research.” Of
course, we have to admit that we did give ourselves a pat on the back by
submitting the site to CYNDI’S LIST where you can find us listed at http://www.cyndislist.com/poor.htm
(Check it out; there are some other sites with poorhouse information …
especially from other countries … which we will try to present on our site
soon.) Our
HOMEPAGE has been modified a bit. We wanted to display the award from Genealogy
Forum; change the option at the lower right of the page to read Monthly Newsletter
(instead of E-mail List); and add … TA DA!!!! (LISTEN
UP! This may turn out to be your favorite part of The Poorhouse Story.) We
added a link to a page called FEATURED ARTICLES. (Even spruced it up with golden
globes to catch your attention!) Here is what that is all about: Many
of the items being submitted to us are so GREAT that we don’t want to merely
post them on the state or county page. (If we did only that, YOU might MISS the
items if they are not on a state in which you have a particular interest.)
http://www.poorhousestory.com/featured_articles.htm
will take you to a list of some of the most interesting material we have
found. You may want to check that list periodically. Another
new feature to be posted very soon (if it isn’t there already … even The
Poorhouse Lady can’t keep up with new postings!) – At the bottom of the
homepage you will see a link at http://www.poorhousestory.com/about_us.htm
to ABOUT US. This will give you some more information about Linda &
Maddie. We don’t tell you ALL our secrets. But this should answer some of the
questions which have been asked by those of you who wonder … just Who the Heck
is doing all this?! By
the way – so much for having our readers proof-read our work. Nobody noticed
(or they were too kind to mention it) that I called the poorhouse cemetery
cleanup in Newburgh/Orange/NY the BAD News (instead of the GOOD News)! Sorry
folks … a little dyslexia showing up there. <red face> -
